Grade: A

This is actually the second time that I've watched this. The first time I watched it I was VERY closed minded, didn't want to hear what Bill Maher had to say, didn't think that his jokes were that funny, and overall, gave it a "C". This time, I watched it with a more open mind, decided not to take everything he said so seriously, or personally, and more than anything, listened to the information, and, subsequently, gave it an "A" this time, weird, eh? This is one of those movies that may shock, may infuriate or even make you sad, IF you let it. More than that, it is the complete examination of religions around the world, and their histories, as we know them. For information alone I thought it was great, but more than that, it was a journey WITH Maher, where we as viewers are learning these things for the first time together, and honestly, I think that made it more enjoyable. He wasn't "preaching" his beliefs (or lack there of), we are learning, and examining together. Great watch, lots to learn, but, MAY make you mad.

Comedy: The Slammin' Salmon- 2009

This was funnier than I thought it was going to be. I should have guessed that, like usual, the broken lizard gang was gonna be funny, but for some reason I judged a book by it's cover. This was just one of those "root for the underdog" kind of movies, with lots of chuckles, and a few hearty laughs. This was a good watch, for adults, and was definitely worth it! Check it out!

Comedy: Spring Breakdown- 2007

This was a pretty decent movie that gave me a few chuckles, and a few good laughs. The idea behind the storyline was pretty good, and the acting was good, all three of the main characters are ALWAYS funny,.. but,.... it just felt like it was missing something to me, and honestly I can't put my finger on it. This movie was a TOTAL Fem-Fest, and I can't imagine a guy (even a gay one) being interested in watching this, but that's ok. This is a chick flick that I think girls of all ages could watch, and enjoy.

Action & Adventure: KICK-ASS- 2010

Grade: B+

The first thing that comes to mind is the fact that this movie is not the seemingly family friendly, lighthearted movie that the trailers make it out to be, which definitely isn't a bad thing, unless you've already started watching it with the kids (which luckily for me wasn't the case). This movie is brutally violent in some spots, and almost downright sad in others. The story was pretty good, and like most super hero stories, fallowed the format, with a little bit of a twist, the main bad-ass character is an 11 year old girl! The entire cast was great, and the acting was wonderful, but I must say, Chloe Moretz was so awesome, she had me wishing that I had grown up with a girl like her to look up to! The entire movie was great, and if you don't mind your kid seeing gratuitous violence you don't have to take this one off the table completely.

Thriller/Suspense: Kalifornia- 1993

While researching a book on serial killings, writer Brian Kessler (David Duchovny) and his girlfriend, Carrie Laughlin (Michelle Forbes), travel cross-country to the murder sites and unwittingly stumble upon strangers who know the subject firsthand. A pair of hitchhikers (Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis) offer to share expenses for the trip, but Kessler doesn't realize just how close he is to his subject -- even as bodies pile up behind them. Grade: B

Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis play the part of somewhat dimwitted, and completely out of touch with reality "red necks" with such ease and believability, it was almost difficult to understand that I wasn't watching a documentary! This movie was incredibly well acted, and David Duchovny's quiet, and at times boyish, demeanor was the perfect opposition to balance out Brad Pitt's borderline insanity and overall creep factor. I can honestly say that this is the first time I have watched a movie starring Brad Pitt, and been completely turned OFF! Sure, this movie was pretty slow moving in parts, and the "accidentally convenient" factor for a lot of the situations could be taken as falling into place a bit to easily, but, for the most part this was a great watch. If you're interested in having that eerie weirded out feeling for a couple of hours, this is definitely worth the watch!

Comedy/Gay and Lesbian: In and Out- 1997

This is another one that I remembered watching a long time ago, but didn't really remember the movie, so decided to watch it again, and was quite happy that I did. This movie really is funny, and, given the topic, a pretty light-hearted, fun comedy. The acting in it was great. I love Joan Cusack, I think she's always funny, and Tom Selleck's part was pretty funny too. As for Howard Brackett, Kevin Kline, they could not have found a better person to play the part. He rode that thin line between questioningly feminine and downright gay the entire time so well, and there were so many laugh out loud moments, for example, the scene where he's "testing his masculinity", pretty funny. Like I said before, this is lighthearted and fun, and if your looking to watch something NOT serious, this is a good one to check out!

Drama/Romantic Drama: The Other Sister- 1999

Ok, so I've seen this movie before, but, that was a WHILE ago, so I thought I'd give it another watch. MAN, for me, this was totally tear-jerktastic! I mean, it so sweet, and cute, and innocent. It's a movie about two mentally challenged people discovering love for the first time. This is just a really cute movie, and REALLY tugs at the heartstrings, that's for sure. And the parts are played wonderfully. If you're interested in watching a tear-jerker, this is definitely one to check out!

Comedy/Indie Comedy: Visioneers- 2007

Ok,... So, the description sounds funny, right? And, it's got Zach Galifainakis in it, and he's a funny dude, so this should be pretty good, right? Well,... unfortunately that is not so much the case with this one. Perhaps my expectations were a bit to high going into it, leaving me feeling a little let down in the laughter department. The only redeeming quality about this movie was that the storyline itself was an original idea, and definitely an interesting concept, but the execution was far too slow moving, and just seemed to take too long to get to anything of substance. I wouldn't really suggest this, nor would I endorse it, but, it was a decent idea, and the acting itself was not bad, so it's not completely lacking worth watching at all.

Drama: Hounddog- 2007

LouEllen's love for Elvis Presley, and his music has always been an escape from her poor, and seemingly tragic, southern small town life, until it is tainted by an assault, and becomes the trigger for remembering that awful event, and instead becomes something she hates. In this story, 12 year old LouEllen is faced with coming to terms with what has happened to her, and her life, and learning, with the help of a trusted family friend, that you have the choice to suffer for life from it, or make something better of yourself because of it.

Grade: B-

This movie was pretty slow moving, and the title definitely holds strong, as that song was sung, or played, about every five minutes during this movie. Dakota Fanning plays this part beautifully, and it was heartbreaking to watch this little girl go through, and survive so many hardships in her life, only to culminate with her own personal loss of innocence. Yet, she still was able to land on her feet, and make such an awful event less horrific through her love of music. This is a good watch, definitely not a family movie.

Drama/ Comedy/ Based on real life: Julie & Julia- 2009

This was a cute look into a specific period of time in this woman's life when she is looking to figure out what she is doing with her life, and through that journey decides that she wants cook her way through Julia Childs cook book, and write a blog about it, which ultimately becomes well known. This had a wonderful combination of funny, and true to life, and sweet, and more. It had it's ups and downs that kept me interested, and that's what I think is the most important part of a movie.

Romantic Comedy: The Ugly Truth- 2009

This was a really funny, and cute romantic comedy full of tons of laugh out loud moments. Gerard Butler plays the PERFECT male chauvinist, and is INCREDIBLY believable! And poor Katherine Heigl's character, can't get relationships right with her super high expectations. This is a fun date-night movie that's not so girlie that it's a chick flick! I think Gerard's character gives it that perfect splash of funny manliness!

Romantic Comedy: Mr. Wrong- 1996

This love story does not take long to wither and die, after Whitman's true personality comes through. After meeting under the "perfect" circumstances, Martha falls madly in love with her new beau, but that can't last when the guy she's seeing is actually a total nut job! This movie was really funny, and had me laughing out loud lots of times. This is really worth the watch, so if you're in the mood for some fun laughs, this is the one for you!

Musical/Comedy: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog- 2008

This was a really funny spin on a musical. Neil Patrick Harris is great in this, and the story is a cute romantic comedy meets comic book fun! It wasn't that lengthy, which is probably a good thing, because I'm not sure that it would have been as good had it been the length of an average movie. This is a good one if you want to just pop in a quick movie for some light hearted laughs, absolutely nothing too serious about this, but lots of fun to watch.

Social and Cultural Documentary: What Would Jesus Buy- 2007

Taking on rampant American consumerism with a focus on Christmas shopping, the Rev. Billy (Bill Talen) and the Church of Stop Shopping go on a cross-country journey to save citizens from the Shopocalypse in this hilarious documentary produced by Morgan Spurlock. Reminding shoppers of the true meaning of Christmas, Reverend Billy exorcises demons at Wal-Mart's headquarters and preaches his message at the Mall of America and Disneyland. (Netflix.com)

Grade: A+

This was a REALLY great look into how "spend happy" we can get as Americans, ESPECIALLY around the holidays. With his alter-ego persona Reverend Billy (Bill Talen) holds demonstrations, and mock church services that point out just what we've been fed through the media, personal tradition, and society to believe about holidays and spending money in general. His look on this epidemic is truly eye opening, and literally caused me to look at myself, and my own financial situation a little closer, and not just take things like spending a little money here and there so easily for granted. Although his persona is a preacher, the satire behind it, and the comedy of it, causes it (surprisingly) to NOT come off preachy, believe it or not! This is well worth the watch, and I think it may just make you take a little harder look at what you're spending your money on!

Dark Comedy/Drama/Horror: Barton Fink- 1991

Idealistic playwright Barton Fink (John Turturro) believes writing should reveal the hopes, dreams and tragedies of the common man. When Hollywood taps him to write a movie, Fink develops severe writer's block and soon falls victim to a strange sequence of events. Unable to combine his deep-seated ethics with Tinseltown's frivolity, the disillusioned and desperate Fink winds up involved in a murder investigation in this Oscar-nominated dramedy.

Grade: B+

This was a really funny, and really easy to get in to. The characters were VERY quirky, yet somehow believable. It was just a really funny look into Barton's life, as he changes from a mediocre playwright, to a Hollywood script writer, and boy does craziness ensue, that's for sure! The acting in this was great, and John Goodman's part was just the right combination of crazy and annoying, yet seemingly innocent and lovable. This really is one that is worth the watch, and I fully suggest it!

Comedy/Family: Bob the Butler- 2005

Tom Green must have been OFF of drugs when he made this, because his acting in it was actually pretty great. This was a cute, funny, family-friendly comedy, and was really enjoyable. Tom Green definitely has a way of being the goof-ball weirdo, but also incredibly lovable, and an underdog you can't help but root for. I would definitely recommend this one as a good choice to watch with the family.

Drama: What's Eating Gilbert Grape- 1993

Grade: B+

Well, it doesn't hurt that Johnny Depp is a total hottie, but more than that, he is an awesome actor. This movie is all about his journey trying to keep his family afloat, and taking care of everything that needs to be done. The entire story is somewhat sad, but completely believable, and the entire time you're just HOPING that good things are going to come to this guy who puts out SO much effort. It really is a good one, and well worth the watch.

Drama/Romance: 28 Days- 2000

First I must preface my review by saying that I LOVE Sandra Bullock and think she's awesome. That being said, this movie was great. The acting was awesome, and it really delved in to why she drinks in the first place. She's somewhat haunted by memories of her mother's drinking, and a not so happy childhood. yet, through it all, she is able to realize that there is more to life than alcohol, and that she should be able to have a real chance at happiness. This was a great watch, that wasn't just a non-stop drama fest, there were lots of funny parts, and it was just a good movie. Check it out!

Documentary/Gay & Lesbian: Prodigal Sons- 2008

I originally saw a segment about this movie on Oprah, and when I came across it on netflix I decided to check it out. The whole idea behind the documentary, and the intimate and personal side of it was very compelling, and incredibly interesting. This was just a very up-close and personal look into the life of this woman, and her family relationships, as well as her brother's. This was made very well, and is well worth the watch, in my opinion.

Documentary: The 50 Worst Movies Ever Made- 2004

An entertaining look at some of the truly terrible moments in film history. This documentary consists of clips from what many believe to be some of the worst movies ever to make it -- or not make it -- into theaters. Laugh through scenes from "Howard the Duck," "Plan Nine from Outer Space," "Attack of the Crab Monsters" and "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians," as well as many others. This really is the best of the worst! (Netflix.com)

Grade: C-

This movie was a pretty wham-bam, thank-you-ma'am look at 50 "bad" movies, most of which I'd never seen before this documentary. It was a nice try, that's for sure, but there was absolutely NO substance to it. This movie basically took small clips from these "bad" movies and counted backwards from 50, no commentary really, or any actors/directors commentaries, or really any explanation of WHY they were bad to begin with. Watch at your own risk, but don't say I told you to!

Children & Family/ Sci-Fi: Planet 51- 2009

After searching the universe for alien life, astronaut Chuck Baker finally finds a planet that does, only here, they seem to be living in their version of America's 1950's. When his spaceship is stranded, and captured by the alien military Chuck realizes quickly that he's the alien here, and has to do everything in his power, with the help of some new friends, to survive being captured, and get back home to planet Earth!

Grade: B

This was a really cute and funny family friendly movie, that also touched on some issues that have been, and might still be, true, when it comes to encountering something we don't fully understand. In a lighthearted way, this movie reveals how it's so much easier to portray something unknown as scary and dangerous, rather than attempting to understand it. I think that the message in this movie was one worth learning, and especially for the little ones, one worth absorbing, and putting into action. I love a movie that can teach a lesson in a fun, and funny, way, without being preachy and overly "do what I say". This was a great one to watch with the kids.

Drama/ Gay and Lesbian: Boys Don't Cry- 1999

This whole story is just about a woman looking to find herself, and looking for acceptance in a world, and more specifically part of the country, that she doesn't fit into. First of all, this was an interesting look into the lives of people from small, rural southern areas, seemingly cut off from the advances of society and the acceptance of different cultures in all forms. Hilary Swank plays this character beautifully, and really had me rooting for her the entire time, to find love, and somewhere she could feel free and safe. This definitely had it's tearjerker moments, but above that was a thought provoking, and compassion inspiring movie. If you want a look into the difficult life that so many gay and lesbian Americans can, have, and may face this is a good movie to watch.

Romantic Comedy/Fantasy: TiMER- 2009

This was an interesting new spin on a romantic comedy, and was something that I have not seen done before, and I LOVE originality in movies. This was just really cute, and a different way to look at "love". Can love exist on a timer? Can a person have more than one true love? What about those who have no true love, can that happen? This was funny, and it really makes you think about love, and appreciate the one you have, or will have.

Documentary: This Film is Not Yet Rated- 2006

Dick questions whether certain studios get preferential treatment and exposes the discrepancies in how the MPAA views sex and violence. This was REALLY interesting and funny! This was just a totally cool look into what we, as movie viewers, rarely think about, and largely take for granted. Who knew that the entire rating system for America's movies was so intertwined with politics and morality, and all done behind a curtain of secrecy. For most of us, we watch the movies that we want to, and probably don't pay much attention to what it's rated, I mean, even in this blog I've never mentioned what a movie was rated, because to me it's irrelevant. But it's interesting to know that so many good movies are being completely shut out of the industry because they couldn't get a "respectable" rating, and for reasons that are not legitimate! There are not set in stone structures to determine a movie's rating! This was just really interesting, and WELL worth the watch! Check it out, but NOT with kids in the room! :)

Comedy/Satire: CSA: Confederate States of America- 2004

What would the United States look like if the South had won the Civil War, slavery was still legal and liberals had fled to Canada? According to filmmaker Kevin Willmott (an assistant professor at the University of Kansas), it would resemble the vision put forth in this provocative mockumentary, set in a modern-day Confederate States of America. Spike Lee lends his name as a producer to this daring, if discomforting, parody. (Netflix.com)

Grade: C+

This was a funny, and interesting look into what life would have been like had the south won. There was A LOT of racist stuff in this movie, but it was done in a way to show the idiocy of racism, not to promote it, and actually, the things that were the most racist and offensive were actually things that existed back then, so you cant fault them for showing us a piece of history that we'd rather have tucked away or swept under a rug. For that reason it was good, it was a good "what if?" movie, and also a good "look at what life was LIKE back then" movie. I think it was worth the watch, and it was done in a way that really was not off putting, and more thought provoking.

Crime Thriller: Law Abiding Citizen- 2009

This was a really good movie about a man who just wants to see everyone involved in the murders of his family, and subsequent trial of those murderers, see justice. He's felt like he was failed but the judicial system, and therefore, they've all got to go! The acting was great, the action was great, and more than that, the idea behind the movie is one I'm sure we can all imagine happening. I'm sure people who have been a victim of a violent crime where the perpetrator has been "let off" for one reason or another has felt like all involved deserved to be punished. This is the movie that fallows that victim as he exacts that punishment. This movie really has you rooting for him, even though he's definitely NOT doing the right thing. Good watch! Check it out!

This was a very touching and thought provoking drama about the struggles a non-traditional family has when some type of tragedy takes place. The acting in this was really good, and Cherry Jones' decline as she got more and more sick was very believable. This was a sad story that you are just hoping for a happy ending for the entire time. This was a good watch for a few different reasons. It was definitely a good tear jerker, so if you want to get out some of that "inner sadness" this is good. It was a good look into the lives of a lesbian family, and the struggles that take place, and it was also a good love story. This movie really showed the meaning behind the vows "through sickness and health" that you take when getting married, and how a relationship can still stay loving and strong, and how difficult loss can be. Check it out, it was worth the watch!

This was one of those creep you out kind of movies that had me on the edge of my seat wanting to yell out and warn the characters, "HE'S CRAZY!!!" I might be a little biased because I LOVED Dylan Walsh in Nip/Tuck, so I went into this movie expecting that I would like it. A lot of movies like this end up going with the cheesy factor, but this one didn't need to go into unbelievably cheesy to get to scary, and that was a nice change of pace. If you want to feel creeped out, this is the one for you, he REALLY played this part well!

The acting in this movie was great, and the situations this poor reporter gets into are crazy, to say the least. This really was a funny watch, check it out!

This was a cute story, and was nice and lighthearted. The acting was good, and the entire mood of the movie was just very easy going, and had a nice flow. This was a nice version of a romantic comedy that didn't have to have any major "drama" or some type of issue between love interests that they ultimately reconcile and stay together, as seems to be the formula for a lot of romantic comedies. This was definitely worth the watch!

This was not some sort of deeply sophisticated movie, just a nice, lighthearted family flick that's sure to make your kids laugh!

I can't believe that it took me this long to finally watch this classic horror movie, but I am certainly glad that I finally did, and there's no question in my mind why it is a classic, that's for sure! This movie was well acted, suspenseful, and really was a psychological type thriller. Like a lot of movies from that time, it was a bit slow moving, but definitely worth thee watch. definitely had it's creepy moments, and overall gave me that "something's not right" feeling. If anything, watch it for the fact that it's such a pop culture classic, and enjoy it because it really is a good movie!

This was a very well acted movie, with an interesting insight into the fact that not all Germans, and specifically Nazis, were actually staunch supporters of Hitler's regime. Tom Cruise was great in this part. One thing that I particularly liked was the transition from German to English in the beginning of the movie. I mean, sure, when we watch movies that take place in other countries we know that they should be speaking their own language, but, considering that Americans are an English speaking country, unless we wanted to read subtitles the entire time, it would have to be in English. I liked that they took note of that fact, and gradually changed to English. All in all, it was a good watch, considering that I'm not a huge war movie fan.

Romantic Drama: The Time Traveler's Wife- 2009

This was a very touching story about a love that won't quit, no matter what, and a man that lives his life the best way he can, without always living it in chronological order. This story was totally original, and the acting was awesome. This is one of those stories that really makes you feel what the characters are feeling, like you are right there with them. It conveyed the emotions very well, and, although at times felt a bit tear-jerky, was a great watch!

Ok, this was one of those movies that had me cringing and thinking "COME ON!!" This movie kept that feeling going by having the "twins" switching places (without knowing it), being in the same room, missing each other by a hair, like one getting on one elevator, while the other is getting off another. It was funny, it was cute, and, once again, another thing I enjoyed about it was the originality, and the acting by Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin was great, both playing two people, and making the distinction between their characters obvious. It was a good watch.

Trying to describe what an action movie is to someone who's never seen one? Well, this definitely falls into the category of high-impact action, and would be a great example of it! I mean, from the first moments of the movie and on it was a series of fast-paced, ass-kicking moments, a total guys movie, which may explain why I gave it a B. This movie was somewhat lacking in a solid story line, I mean, I watched it for about 30 minutes, if not MORE, before the plot of the movie was explained by Bond, in a tidy little bundle too. It seemed like the plot was nearly an after thought to the myriad of different ways they could show people getting beat up and things getting blown up. But, if you can look past that little flaw, and enjoy the action, it's worth the watch!

The characters were played wonderfully, as one would expect, and probably just as important, if not more, the story was very unique and original, and you know I'm a sucker for that. Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin make a great team in this movie, and make it a great watch. Steve Martin's ability to play a person with two souls, basically two people is fun to watch. Definitely check it out!

Romantic Comedy: Did you hear about the Morgans?- 2009

This was pretty funny. It wasn't a "continuously laughing" kind of movie, but the situations were really funny, the couple who are performing the counseling, played by Jane Lynch and Matt Servitto, are hilarious. I love that Jane Lynch! She's a hoot. She was really a driving force behind the laughter, in my opinion. This was a funny, good movie.

Dark Humor Comedy: World's Greatest Dad- 2009

This was an amazingly odd, and yet really funny movie. First of all, Lance and his son's relationship is a totally strange one, to say the least. This movie had a good way of leading you through different emotions, and that's something I always appreciate about movies. The acting was good, and the story was just bizarrely intriguing. Children and family/ Action/ Drama: The Karate Kid- 2010

This was a cute family friendly movie, that was actually a fun watch. The acting was good, the story was good, and it actually surprised me that a remake could be done for that movie and be good, and relevant. I liked it. Great movie to watch with little boys!

Ok, This movie had some pretty brutal scenes. I mean, the opening sequence alone was a bloody massacre that was really only the tip of the ice burg of what was to come. The story line was ok, the acting was ok, but the action scenes, and the overall feel of the movie was great. Good watch. Anytime there is killing with swards it gets way more than a little messy!

Family Sci-Fi/Fantasy: Wall-E- 2008

This movie was just great. It was cute, and funny, and heart warming. I mean, honestly, who would have guessed that a CG robot could actually make me misty eyed. Not to mention that despite the total lack of dialogue for a large portion of the movie, it was still so easy to stay interested and enjoy. This is a family friendly, wonderful movie.

Comedy: Raising Arizona- 1987

After watching a news story about the recent birth of quintuplets, ex-cop wife, and her ex-con husband, after years of being able to conceive their own children, decided that it would be a great plan to take one of the quints to raise as their own. After all, they figured they'd be helping this family, that can't possibly be able to take care of all of those children alone, right?

The idea of the story is definitely funny, and the acting and comedic timing is great, this just didn't fall into my list of all time best comedies, but that's ok, it doesn't mean it wasn't good, maybe just not my idea of "super" hilarious. I did enjoy it though, so I gave it a C+, what more can I say. It's worth checking it out, and see if it suits your sense of humor!

This was a very interesting, and intriguing insight into a totally different side of Mike Tyson than the public has ever been shown before. Behind his "tough guy" outer crust, lies a normal, emotionally charged man. Angry at times, fragile at times, family man, friend, lover, all of the sides that make up a human are examined and exposed in this documentary. It was put together and edited beautifully, and was a very revealing documentary, and honestly, such a profoundly personal look into someones life is always worth the greatest respect.

Comedy: Adventureland- 2008

Ok, so this movie was cute, and funny, and had a lot of great actors. The one thing that kept me from giving it an 'A' through (I think) was the fact that it had too many of those "my personality is to not have a personality" characters. At this point, I'm beginning to question if those actors who portray their characters that way (and you know who I'm talking about) are trying to play the role that way, or, is that the only thing they CAN do, and in other words aren't very good actors. Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh, I mean, I did give it a 'B', so I did think it was funny,... these are just things I'm seriously starting to question when I see these actors who seem to be playing the same character in every movie they're in,... that's all. Over all though, it is worth the watch.

Comedy: Labor Pains- 2009

There are a few good aspects to this movie, this is for sure, it's fun, loud, lots of action, and comedy, but the story line was wishy-washy, at best. I think they really tried this time (after complaints from the first one I'm sure) to make the fight scenes more clear, and easy to watch. In other words, they were much less blurry and close up than before. This is a great one to watch with the kids, especially boys, and what can I say, Megan Fox IS a fox, and that makes it worth watching to me! ;)

Sci-Fi Thriller- District 9- 2009

Throughout history, humans have had an unfortunate track record for finding, and segregating anyone, or in this case anything, that is "different". What happens when that difference is more than skin deep, and more like worlds deep? How would the people of earth react if suddenly we were living amongst alien life forms? The idea of this movie alone is something that should make us think. In a way, it seems very reasonable that the human race would react so hostilely to an alien "invasion" (I use that word loosely, because it seems to convey a more violent intent). This was just a well acted action/sci-fi movie that did a great job at making a social commentary in an interesting way.

Suspense/Drama: The Hurt Locker- 2008

Well, it's no question why this movie won best picture of the year, and was so wildly popular, it was amazing! I don't think I've watched a movie that LITERALLY kept me on the edge of my seat, with my stomach in my throat for so much of the movie. This movie was really able to convey the emotions of the army squad, and allows the viewer to place themselves in their shoes. This was a total roller coaster of emotions; fear, anxiety, anticipation, relief, humor, and back again. This was a great movie, on so many levels.

Comedy: The Goods; Live Hard, Sell Hard- 2009

This was a really funny movie, that had me laughing quite a bit. The whole premise of the story line was so fresh and such a new take, that that alone made me enjoy the idea of it, and it did not fall short of my expectations at all. Ricky Gervais is funny, as usual, and Jennifer Garner is as well. For being such an unbelievable plot, it was acted in a way that was very much so!

In a way, I wish I hadn't heard all of the hype, and I would have gone into this movie not expecting anything at all, and probably would have had a better response,.... maybe,.... It was just VERY slow moving, a WHOLE lot of time, for not a lot of story. Sure, the acting was all just fine, but there wasn't really anything that drew me in, or a character that I liked and cared about what happened to them. It just wasn't that spectacular in my opinion.

Romantic Comedy: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past- 2009

In this family friendly fantasy adventure four children from London are sent away to a boarding school for safety during WWII, only to discover a magical wardrobe cabinet that transports them to a mystical place and time, where their troubles in "the real world" seem no more prevalent than they are there.

For some reason I was actually hesitant to watch this one. It took me a while to decide that I did indeed want to watch it, and I was pleasantly surprised. The story was wonderful, and actually kept me really interested. The acting was great, and the film itself was amazingly visually stunning. A wonderful fairy tale story.

Nearly completely dissatisfied with his life, Mike O'Donnell (Matthew Perry) wonders what life would have been like if he had made other choices, and wishes for a "do-over", and is completely surprised to find out that he gets what he wants, only he doesn't travel back in time, he's 17, only this time, he has kids his age, and uses this opportunity to get to know them better from another perspective.

Grade: B-

This was a cute movie, of course. It was funny, and had all of the normal things you look for in a cute teen comedy. The acting is well done, and the laughs come fairly easily. Reno 911's Thomas Lennon's role was hilarious, certainly driving plenty of laughs. This was a sort of "moral of the story" movie. In the end, the grass is not always greener.

Here's a look into the "quiet" lives of "simple" folks, and the troubles, and quirks that come along with them. After an unforeseen accident almost permanently disfigures a certain "member" of the crew, hilarity ensues. How can a seemingly average group of factory employees be so funny? I'm not sure, but they are!

Grade: A+

This movie is really funny! Perhaps I'm a bit biased because I like Jason Bateman so much, but COME ON! This movie had me laughing quite a bit, and that is exactly what I'm looking for when I watch a comedy. This is a quirky, comedy that has a little bit of everything, including "romance". The characters are perfectly played, and the comedic timing is awesome!

This movie was an engaging, and thought provoking look into the seemingly lonely and somewhat troubled life of a young girl, and a point in her life where she is learning more about her family than she ever thought possible. The acting in this movie was great, and very believable. This is certainly a movie to watch if you are in the mood to "feel" things.

Drama/Tear Jerker: My sister's keeper- 2009

This movie is a non-stop tear fest, with so many moments that will bring you to tears you may actually go through a box of tissues. The story is wonderful, the message is powerful, and the acting was amazing. This is one of those stories where you'd better be prepared to cry, and have a strong emotional response.

Fallow the life and career of former president George W. Bush in this "satiric retrospective" of the positives and negatives of his life.

This was a wonderfully acted movie, and honestly led me to understand Bush in a whole new light. This is definitely an interesting insight into his life, and regardless of weather everything in this movie is completely factual or not, it was a great watch, and definitely kept me interested.

Romantic Comedy: Couples Retreat- 2009

As the retreat moves on it seems like more than just their marriage is on shaky ground.

This movie had some pretty good actors, and all of their parts were played well. I had a few problems though. First of all the wives in this movie seemed WAY to young for the husbands, almost unbelievably so. Also, it just wasn't one of those movies that had me consistently laughing, although it did have it's moments. I think I can say that it was worth the watch, just wasn't as funny as the trailer made it out to be.

Crime Drama: Eastern Promises- 2007

This movie started out very slow to me, and was almost hard for me to get into. It wasn't until about 30 minutes or so into it that I began to enjoy it. This movie was VERY character driven, and was mostly dialogue, although it was interesting, and the few very short "action" scenes were good, especially the roughly 5-10 minute sequence of Viggo Mortensen fighting for his life nude in a steam room. The story was a good one, it just seemed that they took a story that could have been 20 minutes and made it into a movie. I can say that, for the most part, the acting was very believable.

Comedy/Suspense: The 'Burbs-1989

Every neighborhood in America has that one house on the block that just seems off, and the people who live there seem even more off. This is the story that fallows a group of neighbors as they attempt to investigate their strange, and down right creepy neighbors, in an attempt to prove that they are murderers.

Grade: C+

This was a pretty funny movie, with Tom Hanks doing a fantastic job as usual. There's also a lovely little part for Corey Feldman, which is always funny to see. The only "downside" was that there wasn't "constant" laughs, but, as with many comedies, that's not always the case. All in all it was pretty funny, and worth the watch.

Drama based on real life: American Gangster-2007

This movie fallows the life of Frank Lucas, played by Denzel Washington, during his rise to, and ultimate fall from, control of one of New York's most powerful African American gangs of the 60's.

Grade: B+

Denzel Washington played this role wonderfully of course, as well as the entire cast. The organization of the movie, and sequence of events definitely keeps you on your toes, and the intertwined story lines of both the "good guys" and "bad guys" makes it all the more interesting. This is definitely not a movie to watch with the kids!

Romantic Comedy: Picture Perfect-1997

After finding out that the reason Kate was passed over for a promotion was because, unlike her colleagues, she was not married with children, her best friend comes up with a lie on the fly. She tells her boss that she is engaged to the videographer at a wedding she recently attended and happened to take a picture with. Craziness ensues as Kate needs to keep her lie afloat.

Grade: B

I am a huge Jennifer Aniston fan. I mean, what's not to like about her, she is America's sweet heart. The movie was pretty funny, the story line was cute, as I expected. The acting was good, and it was all-in-all a sweet romantic comedy. The ending was incredibly predictable, but very cute.

Comedy/'80's- Spies Like Us-1985

Who does the government turn to when they need two decoy spies? Why, Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd of course! Two of the goofiest, incompetent agents they can find! Watch and see, as they attempt to navigate their way through enemy territory, all in an effort (and a bad one at that) to save the America from nuclear war!!

Ok, ok,... another 80's movie, with all of the usual 80's movie aspects that we have all come to know, EXPECT, and love! This one WAS pretty funny, and certainly had it's action-ish moments. The acting was good, all the usual slap-sticky situations, facial expressions, and lets not forget wacky voices. It was good for what it was: a light hearted 80's comedy about two not-so-good spies who have to save the world.

Drama/Based on a True Story: Mockingbird Don't Sing- 2001

Based on the events of Katie Steele's life, a 14 year old girl who had been locked away and completely isolated her entire life. This is the story of the the time and effort put in by a specialized team, in the attempt too teach her not only language, but how to live life.

Grade: B

This really was an interesting story, and an incredibly sad look into the life of someone who was totally neglected, and kept in the worst circumstances imaginable, to the point of not even being able to talk. The fact that this was based on a true story is horrifying, and incredibly sad. The acting was great, and for being filmed in 2001, it genuinely looked and felt like it was from the 70's/80's. If your interested in seeing one of the many atrocities that take place against children, this is worth watching, although sometimes shocking, this was a good movie.

Romantic Dramady: Management 2008

This movie was cute, and had its funny moments, but in actuality was FAR to convenient. Every situation in the movie was SO constructed that it totally made it seem unreal, and highly unlikely to ever actually happen in real life. I mean, the story was cute, and the ending was a pretty gushy/romantic ending, like we're all looking for in a romance movie, but it just wasn't stand out fantastic. I can say that the acting was pretty good, both of them played their parts great, and the rest of the cast was awesome too. So, if you can get past the whole "everything-falling-into-place-in-an-incredibly-unbelievably-way" thing, then this is the movie for you!

Romantic Comedy: Bridget Jones's Diary- 2001

This was a funny, and entertaining look into the life of a single woman in her thirties. Renee Zellweger plays the part wonderfully. The acting was great, the story was great. It was a perfect romantic comedy, without fallowing the usual "rules" of the genre. If you're interested in watching a cute romantic comedy, this is the one for you!

Crime Documentary: Very Young Girls- 2007

Enter into the life of teen prostitutes, and their struggle to leave their pimps, and "the life" behind. This is an incredibly intimate look into the inner thoughts of these young girls who have been forced into this lifestyle, and sexually exploited.

Grade: A+

This was not only informative, but actually very sad. Not only did this movie show the girls' individual struggles through their attempts (mostly successful, but not without "relapse") to leave their pimps, after years of brain washing, but it showed the power of the human spirit, and the fact that these young women so desperately want something better in their lives. This movie REALLY makes you re-evaluate your impact in the world, and I wish that there was something I could do to help.

Musical/Comedy: The Producers-2005

This was a very funny musical, that is DEFINITELY worth the watch. Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane give wonderful performances, and Uma Therman is also pretty funny! If you're looking for a funny, light hearted comedy/musical, this is a perfect option for you!

Drama/Tearjerker: Awakenings- 1990

Based on a true story, this movie is full of emotion. In it, Dr.Sayer, played by Robin Williams, uses a newly discovered Parkinson's drug to bring back 15 patients in his chronic neurology ward from vegetative states, most of whom had been in them for more than 25 years.

Grade: B+

This was SUCH a tearjerker!! Can you imagine? Being gone for more than 25 years, from age 11, only to wake up as an adult? The idea of it seems horrible, but at the same time, absolutely amazing that one person did not want to take that as a final answer, and wanted to try to do something to better these people's lives. The acting in it was amazing, Robin Williams did a wonderful job, as usual (I'm a huge fan) and Robert De Niro was AWESOME, I mean, he plays this part brilliantly, and REALLY gets you into the story. He had me crying off and on the entire movie. Wonderful!

Christmas/Dramady: 12 Days of Christmas Eve- 2004

And again, and again and again, until he can figure out that making a deal is not as important as spending the day with the people who matter most, his family.

Grade: C+

This was a movie that fallowed the whole "groundhog day" format, but was still enjoyable, if not original. Personally I like movies that try and see, how would someone react to having to relive the same day over and over? To me, the thought seems not only scary, but might just drive someone insane! The acting was decent, the story was pretty fun. My only negative comment was that the box alone lead me to believe that this was going to be a comedy, and instead gave me very little to laugh about. It was a pretty decent Christmas movie though, and if that is what you are looking for, then give this one a try.

Comedy: Miss Congeniality- 2000

This is a funny, and cute movie about the total transformation of a woman who is the total opposite of a beauty queen, into a possible winner. Sandra Bullock does a wonderful job, and I'm not just saying that because I LOVE her! This was a very light hearted, fun comedy. My only "negative" opinion is that there wasn't that much to the actual story line, but that was ok, because it fit the feel of the subject.

Ok, ok,..... This movie DEFINITELY had it's "edge-of-your-seat" moments, and was certainly a fun watch,.... buuuuuuut,.... it was pretty cliche and pretty predictable. I DO have to say that I enjoyed Liam Neeson in this role, and thought he was pretty bad-ass, I enjoyed the immense amount of neck karate chops, and pistol whipping that went on, I can say I got my fill! Was ALL of the acting great? I wouldn't say there were Oscar worthy performances in it, but it was fun to watch, and pretty entertaining!

Action: Punisher: War Zone- 2008

The ultimate "good guy" who also happens to be a total bad ass!

This story was TOTALLY awesome! I mean, vigilante justice against REALLY bad guys- how great is THAT? They made Jigsaw look SO gross, and his brother Loony-Bin-Jim is SCARILY psychotic! Their acting was great!! If you are looking for an action-packed, vengeance-filled, thrill ride, THIS is the movie for you!!

Drama/tear jerker: Kramer vs. Kramer-1979

Workaholic, fast-paced Ted is totally caught off guard when his wife, unhappy and dissatisfied with her life, leaves him and their 6 year old son, only to return a year and a half later to claim him, and petition the courts for full custody.

Grade: B+

Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep give powerful performances, both tear-jerkingly good. The story is good, and one that really makes you think. The little boy is SO believable, and did a wonderful job drawing me into the story. If your in the mood for a good tear-jerker, this might just be a good choice for you!

Romantic (teen) comedy: Nick and Norah's Infinate Playlist-2008

In this movie, we fallow a group of teens on a night in New York, as they search for their favorite band's secret show.

This was a cute comedy, and as usual, Michael Cera is funny and cute in his nerdy/shy way. The acting was decent, and the story was as well, it just felt like it was lacking something. If your looking for a cute, teenage love story type of movie, this is worth checking out.

Annie Wilkes is Paul Sheldon's number one fan, so naturally, when his car careens off the side of a cliff during a snow storm she happens to be there to rescue him. After holding him captive in her home for days, and nursing his injuries, it becomes painfully clear to Paul that Annie has no plans of letting him go.

This movie had me on the edge of my seat, or open-mouth-gaping a number of times. The acting was awesome, Kathy Bates convinced me! This was just a creepy movie, and, as is usual for Stephen King, was an awesome story! If you're interested in being a bit creeped out, and in the mood for a suspense, this is definitely one to watch!

Romantic Comedy: Baby on Board-2008

The movie was pretty cute, and the acting was great, but the story left something to be desired, for me at least. It was actually kind of frustrating, and the entire time I just wanted to yell at the characters to stop pussy-footing around the issues and say what needed to be said! Considering that the entire story is set on misunderstandings, and the fact that NEITHER couple could come out and ask the other what was going on, it kind of made me feel like there was no point to the movie. If you want to watch a fairly cute romantic comedy, and are prepared to be slightly frustrated throughout the entire movie, then this is the one for you!

First of all I would like to call "shenanigans"!! There was a total misrepresentation, leading me to believe that this was going to be some kind of stoner movie. Surprisingly, this movie was full of recognisable celebrities, who, as far as the acting, where pretty good in this movie. The story line however,.... Not so great. Sure, it had it's moments; funny at times, touching at times, horrifying at times. There was nothing about these characters that made me like them, or remotely care about what happened to them. Did I hate it? I wouldn't go that far, but would I watch it again, no. And that's what I have to say about that...

This movie was definitely an entertaining watch, with plenty of interesting twists and turns. I personally enjoy watching movies where the woman is a total bad ass, and Keira Knightley played the part wonderfully. In fact the entire cast, including 90210 co-stars Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green playing themselves. The story was easy to get into, and definitely a fun watch.

Romantic Comedy: Gigantic 2008

This is a look into the life of a single mattress salesman who is pursuing his lifelong dream of adopting a Chinese baby. In the process he falls in love with the daughter of one of his customers.

This was an interesting look into a brief period of time in this guys life. The acting was great, and the story was interesting and entertaining. Brian, played by Paul Dano, gives a great performance as a man who seems to be going through life with nothing really outstanding going on. This was one of those stories that didn't necessarily have a point, (not one that I got, at least) but was more about watching this specific time in this person's life. If you're interested in quirky romantic comedies, this is the one for you.

Romantic Comedy: Benny and Joon 1993

This is an incredibly cute movie, that is funny and heart warming all at the same time. The acting is great, and as usual Johny Depp is a hottie. This movie gives you insight into the types of decisions people have to make when a close family member has a mental illness. It was a good story, well acted, and a fun watch.

Romantic Comedy: Penelope- 2006

This was an incredibly cute story, that pretty much fallows the fairy tale guide lines. This was not only funny, and heart warming, but also a journey into a young woman's self discovery. Christina Ricci plays this part beautifully, and the entire cast does a wonderful performance as well. If you're the type of person that can let your imagination run, and get into a fairy tale story, this is the one for you. It is certainly worth watching.

Drama: Autumn Hearts: A New Begining-2007

This story is not only touching, and emotional, it is also well written, and heart warming. The acting was wonderful, and the story line was thought provoking. Susan Sarandon, as well as the rest of the cast's, performances were great. The ending left something to be desired, but not enough to detract from the movie. This was a very attentive look into the effects that this horrific time had on these people. If your looking for a movie that will make you think, this is the one for you.

Drama/Romance: Then She Found Me-2007

This story fallows April, played by Helen Hunt, through one of the most turbulent times of her life. At 39, she is desperate to have a child, when her husband decides he wants a divorce. In the same week her adopted mother dies, and her birth mother contacts her. As if that wasn't enough, she meets and begins a romantic relationship with, one of her student's father.

Grade: A-

Helen Hunt gives a magnificent performance in this touching story about a middle aged woman in crisis. She is truly heartfelt in this role and makes it incredibly easy to not only get into the story, but empathize completely with her. Bette Midler gives a fantastic performance as usual. This is definitely worth watching. If you want to see a movie that pulls at your heart strings, and is a bit of a tearjerker, this is the one for you.

Comedy: Sgt. Bilko 1996

In this movie, fun loving gamblaholic Sgt. Bilko and his troop are visited by his nemisis, bent on revenge, years after Bilko inadvertently had him shipped to Greenland. Considering that Bilko's troop totally lacks organization, and spends most of their time gambling and drinking, it doesn't make it hard for him to find problems.

Grade: B-

This was a surprisingly funny look into the life of a completely apathetic troop in the midst of being caught. This movie certainly fallowed the 80's comedy movie format, and was pretty entertaining. As usual, Steve Martin gave a great performance, and it was nice to see Phil Hartman again. If you're interested in watching a light hearted '80's comedy, this is a good choice.

Documentary: American Movie 1999

This is a movie chronicling the life of Mark Borchardt, during the making of his first feature film, "Coven". This is an intimate look into the life of a man persuing his dream, and the friends and family that help to make it a reality.

This was an interesting, yet sometimes slow moving, look into Mark's life. Although the topic of the documentary is the making of "Coven", we delve deeper into his personal life, and the troubles, and sacrafices he faces in order to complete his movie. This was pretty good, it was entertaining, and kept me interested.

Thriller: Population 436- 2006

How can a town in the middle of nowhere manage to keep their population exactly 436, for more than 60 years? The answer is, not without a bit of effort on the part of both the sheriff department, and the towns people themselves. In this story, a census taker is sent to figure it out, and in the meantime is forced into bizarre situations with dire consequences.

This was a pretty entertaining movie, and the description definitely made me wonder, how could it happen? Fred Durst is a co-star of the movie, and played the part surprisingly well, he certainly exceeded my expectations. All in all it was pretty enjoyable. The acting was decent, and the story was pretty good.

Romantic Comedy/Drama: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2004

After a failed attempt at an apology, and learning that she is dating another guy, because she doesn't remember him, he decides to undergo the procedure as well, only after it has already begun he decides that he no longer want to go through with it.

Grade: B+

This is an awesome movie, that takes you on a strange adventure through Joel's (Jim Carey) mind. Both parts are played incredibly well, and the ending is definitely one you look forward to. This is a hard one to describe, but it's a really great movie. If you are interested in stepping out of the box, and watching a movie that doesn't necessarily fallow the typical structure, this is the one for you!

Horror/Drama: Interview with the Vampire 1994

This is an AWESOME movie that chronicles the life of Louis, his creator Lestat, and their "adopted" daughter Claudia through the 18th century to the present day.

Grade: A+

This up close and personal look into the lives of these three characters throughout history is both intriguing and mesmerising. The acting is phenomenal, and the writing equally fantastic. Not to mention that it is cast with three of the most gorgeous men of the time. If you like vampires, and want to see what life is like from their prospective this is the movie for you! The DEFINITELY made being a vampire incredibly sexy!

Drama: Seven Pounds 2008

This is a movie about a man who, after the sudden accidental death of his wife, decides that it is his duty to help as many people as he can, before he commits suicide. In the process he begins a romantic relationship with one of the people he has decided to help.

Grade: B-

This was a somewhat confusing movie to fallow, with a lot of flash back scenes and slightly vague dialogue, in order to achieve the completely predictable "unexpected" ending. As usual, Will Smith gives a wonderful performance, and so does Rosario Dawson. The acting is definitely good enough to allow overlooking the muddied story line. I thought it was pretty good, and had some very "tear jerker" moments. If you're in the mood to watch something that leaves you feeling slightly depressed, this is the movie for you.

Drama: The Virgin Suicides 1999

This is a story about five sisters, whose incredibly overbearing, and detrimentally over protective mother, causes the daughters she is trying to protect, to turn down a dark road. So what happens when a mother is too involved?

Grade: B-

This was a pretty slow moving film, but interesting enough to WANT to fallow it. This was a pretty depressing look into these girls lives, and the end result is pretty horrifying. If you're interested in watching a movie that will not make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, but will make you think a little bit, this is the one for you.

Horror: The Omen 1976

This is the story of a woman who gives birth to a still born child. Without her knowledge, and at the request of the hospital's priest, her husband secretly adopts him, and passes him off as their own child. But what he doesn't know, is that he is the son of the DEVIL!

We've all heard of Damien, if anything, that name has become a pop culture reference, so I decided to watch it. Perhaps I have been spoiled by the movies of today, the thrillers, the suspense, horror and slasher, and maybe in the 70's when this came out it was super scary, but today,... for me,... not so much. It had it's parts. I mean, when the nanny gets every one's attention at the party, the hangs herself, pretty good, and when photographer guy's head gets cut clean off by a sheet of glass, not bad either. It DID keep me interested, but in all honesty,.. by the end I was kinda dosing off.

Drama/Romance: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2008

In this story, Benjamin Button (played by Brad Pitt) is born with a peculiar condition... He is essentially an elderly person, he has the looks and health of someone in their nineties! After his mother dies during child birth, his father contemplates throwing him into a river, but settles on abandoning him on the steps of an old folks home. Luckily for Benjamin he is accepted by the people living there, and from an outsiders point of view blends in seamlessly. This movie fallows the story of his fascinating life.

Grade: A+

This was a WONDERFUL movie! And I'm not just saying that because Brad Pitt was the lead character! :) It was interesting, entertaining, heart felt, and splendidly acted. The idea alone is an awesome concept. It was a touching life story, of a man who was curiously inspiring. I would recommend this to ANYONE, and would watch it again, no problem.

Dark Comedy: Sunshine Cleaning 2008

Got a disturbingly gruesome murder scene that needs to be cleaned up? Well Sunshine Cleaning is the place to call. Due to her financial troubles, and her son's suspected (by school staff) special needs, Rose creates a highly specialized business, with the help of her sister Norah.

Grade: B+

This was a fascinating look into the life of a single mother, living her life the best she can, and trying to make a way for her and her son. The acting was great, and the unexpected situations the characters find themselves in leads to some pretty amusing scenes. If you're in the mood for something funny, but definitely on the dark side, this is the movie for you!
