Comedy: Spring Breakdown- 2007

This was a pretty decent movie that gave me a few chuckles, and a few good laughs. The idea behind the storyline was pretty good, and the acting was good, all three of the main characters are ALWAYS funny,.. but,.... it just felt like it was missing something to me, and honestly I can't put my finger on it. This movie was a TOTAL Fem-Fest, and I can't imagine a guy (even a gay one) being interested in watching this, but that's ok. This is a chick flick that I think girls of all ages could watch, and enjoy.

Comedy/Gay and Lesbian: In and Out- 1997

When dim-bulb actor Cameron Drake (Matt Dillon) wins an Oscar for playing a gay Marine, he outs his high school drama teacher, Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline), in his acceptance speech. It all comes as a surprise to Howard -- not to mention to his long-suffering fiancée, Emily (Joan Cusack). This is another one that I remembered watching a long time ago, but didn't really remember the movie, so decided to watch it again, and was quite happy that I did. This movie really is funny, and, given the topic, a pretty light-hearted, fun comedy. The acting in it was great. I love Joan Cusack, I think she's always funny, and Tom Selleck's part was pretty funny too. As for Howard Brackett, Kevin Kline, they could not have found a better person to play the part. He rode that thin line between questioningly feminine and downright gay the entire time so well, and there were so many laugh out loud moments, for example, the scene where he's "testing his masculinity", pretty funny. Like I said before, this is lighthearted and fun, and if your looking to watch something NOT serious, this is a good one to check out!

Drama/Romantic Drama: The Other Sister- 1999

Carla Tate (Juliette Lewis) has an independent streak a mile wide. Trouble is, she's mentally handicapped, and her overprotective parents (Diane Keaton and Tom Skerritt) have misgivings about her getting her own apartment and pursuing a relationship with another mentally challenged person (Giovanni Ribisi). An emotional tour de force for Lewis, The Other Sister is ultimately a triumphant story of perseverance in the face of long odds. (Netflix.com)

Ok, so I've seen this movie before, but, that was a WHILE ago, so I thought I'd give it another watch. MAN, for me, this was totally tear-jerktastic! I mean, it so sweet, and cute, and innocent. It's a movie about two mentally challenged people discovering love for the first time. This is just a really cute movie, and REALLY tugs at the heartstrings, that's for sure. And the parts are played wonderfully. If you're interested in watching a tear-jerker, this is definitely one to check out!

Romantic Comedy: Mr. Wrong- 1996

Sweet love goes sour in this romantic comedy romp! Martha (Ellen DeGeneres) won't get married until she finds the perfect man. When she meets the handsome and wealthy Whitman Crawford (Bill Pullman), Martha thinks he's Mr. Right. Wrong! Crawford's actually disturbed and obsessive, and Martha will do anything to get rid of him. Trouble is, he'll do anything to stay! (Netflix.com)

Grade: C+

This love story does not take long to wither and die, after Whitman's true personality comes through. After meeting under the "perfect" circumstances, Martha falls madly in love with her new beau, but that can't last when the guy she's seeing is actually a total nut job! This movie was really funny, and had me laughing out loud lots of times. This is really worth the watch, so if you're in the mood for some fun laughs, this is the one for you!

Drama/Romance: 28 Days- 2000

Newspaper columnist Gwen Cummings (Sandra Bullock) never met a drink she couldn't quaff. But when her drunken buffoonery ruins her sister's wedding -- and does some major property damage -- a judge orders her to choose between rehab and jail. Gwen won't come clean about being an alcoholic, but a few days into her month-long dry-out, she meets a fellow resident (Viggo Mortensen) who'll change her outlook on life and love. Grade: B+

First I must preface my review by saying that I LOVE Sandra Bullock and think she's awesome. That being said, this movie was great. The acting was awesome, and it really delved in to why she drinks in the first place. She's somewhat haunted by memories of her mother's drinking, and a not so happy childhood. yet, through it all, she is able to realize that there is more to life than alcohol, and that she should be able to have a real chance at happiness. This was a great watch, that wasn't just a non-stop drama fest, there were lots of funny parts, and it was just a good movie. Check it out!

Children & Family/ Sci-Fi: Planet 51- 2009

After searching the universe for alien life, astronaut Chuck Baker finally finds a planet that does, only here, they seem to be living in their version of America's 1950's. When his spaceship is stranded, and captured by the alien military Chuck realizes quickly that he's the alien here, and has to do everything in his power, with the help of some new friends, to survive being captured, and get back home to planet Earth!

Grade: B

This was a really cute and funny family friendly movie, that also touched on some issues that have been, and might still be, true, when it comes to encountering something we don't fully understand. In a lighthearted way, this movie reveals how it's so much easier to portray something unknown as scary and dangerous, rather than attempting to understand it. I think that the message in this movie was one worth learning, and especially for the little ones, one worth absorbing, and putting into action. I love a movie that can teach a lesson in a fun, and funny, way, without being preachy and overly "do what I say". This was a great one to watch with the kids.

Romantic Comedy/Fantasy: TiMER- 2009

In this comedic fantasy, science has facilitated the search for a soul mate via biotechnological implants that count down to the moment one is supposed to meet his or her match. But Oona (Emma Caulfield) is worried: She's nearly 30, and her TiMER isn't ticking yet. Will her dream guy get snatched up by someone else? This was an interesting new spin on a romantic comedy, and was something that I have not seen done before, and I LOVE originality in movies. This was just really cute, and a different way to look at "love". Can love exist on a timer? Can a person have more than one true love? What about those who have no true love, can that happen? This was funny, and it really makes you think about love, and appreciate the one you have, or will have.

Romantic Comedy: My Life in Ruins- 2009

After moving to Greece for a teaching position, then being let go, Georgia takes a job as a tour guide, and unfortunately is little more than mediocre at best, that is until she's placed with a new driver. Georgia soon discovers that life can be more fascinating than ancient ruins, and real human relationships can be more satisfying than she thought.

Grade: B

This was a cute story, and was nice and lighthearted. The acting was good, and the entire mood of the movie was just very easy going, and had a nice flow. This was a nice version of a romantic comedy that didn't have to have any major "drama" or some type of issue between love interests that they ultimately reconcile and stay together, as seems to be the formula for a lot of romantic comedies. This was definitely worth the watch!

Comedy/Romantic Comedy: Whatever Works- 2009

After a failed suicide, and consequential divorce, genius, and former physicist Boris (played by Larry David) lives a antisocial, curmudgeon lifestyle, as a chess instructor. That is, until a young runaway, naive southern girl, winds up on his doorstep, and his life, and her family's lives begin to change immensely. Directed by Woody Allen.

Grade: B

This was an interesting side to a story rarely seen in movies. The life of a divorced older man, and his entertaining journey through a specific period of time in his life. It was funny, and smart, yet cute and romantic, with the ultimate "moral of the story" being: Do, for your life "whatever works" for you. This was a good movie, and very well acted!

Romantic Comedy: Did you hear about the Morgans?- 2009

After a night out to dinner, in an attempt to reconcile their separation, husband and wife, Meryl and Paul witness a murder, and after being seen by the murderer, are now on his hit list as well. In an attempt to keep them safe, Meryl and Paul are placed in the witness protection program, where they have to face their marital woes together.

Grade: B-

This was a cute romantic comedy, as most are. The story line was a good one, the characters were somewhat believable, and, all-in-all, it was a good watch. It wasn't too lovey-dovey gushy, but at the same time, it wasn't a non-stop laugh-fest either. It was ok. I guess worth checking out though, I mean, I gave it a B-.

Romantic Comedy: I do and I don't- 2007

Before their church will allow them to marry there, Bob and Cheryl are obligated to attend couples counseling, however, since they waited too long to book the class, they are placed in a fast-track one-on-one counseling with a couple from the church, who are first timers themselves.

Grade: B+

This was pretty funny. It wasn't a "continuously laughing" kind of movie, but the situations were really funny, the couple who are performing the counseling, played by Jane Lynch and Matt Servitto, are hilarious. I love that Jane Lynch! She's a hoot. She was really a driving force behind the laughter, in my opinion. This was a funny, good movie.

Comedy: Adventureland- 2008

Unable to afford the European vacation he'd dreamed of, recent college grad James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) reluctantly takes a gig at a local amusement park, only to learn that the dead-end job is, in fact, excellent preparation for the real world. Writer-director Greg Mottola's semi-autobiographical comedy-drama, filmed in Pittsburgh's Kennywood Park, also stars Ryan Reynolds and Kristen Stewart. (Per Netflix.com)

Ok, so this movie was cute, and funny, and had a lot of great actors. The one thing that kept me from giving it an 'A' through (I think) was the fact that it had too many of those "my personality is to not have a personality" characters. At this point, I'm beginning to question if those actors who portray their characters that way (and you know who I'm talking about) are trying to play the role that way, or, is that the only thing they CAN do, and in other words aren't very good actors. Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh, I mean, I did give it a 'B', so I did think it was funny,... these are just things I'm seriously starting to question when I see these actors who seem to be playing the same character in every movie they're in,... that's all. Over all though, it is worth the watch.

Comedy: Labor Pains- 2009

How does someone go about keeping a job that they just aren't that good at? Why, pretend to be pregnant, get the sympathy, keep the job, and get cut a little slack for the lack of quality work. but wait, forgetting one thing that comes along with that lie, TOTAL insanity, and a whole lot of trouble!

Grade: C+

Ok, this was cute, the acting was average, and honestly, it was a little hard to take Lindsay Lohan seriously as a business minded "go-getter", but, that's neither here nor there, it did make me laugh, and the story did keep me interested. In other words, it wasn't BAD, per say, I mean, I didn't turn it off or anything, but, it wasn't that great either.

Fantasy: The Chronicles of Narnia; The lion, the witch anf the wardrobe- 2005

In this family friendly fantasy adventure four children from London are sent away to a boarding school for safety during WWII, only to discover a magical wardrobe cabinet that transports them to a mystical place and time, where their troubles in "the real world" seem no more prevalent than they are there.

Grade: B+

For some reason I was actually hesitant to watch this one. It took me a while to decide that I did indeed want to watch it, and I was pleasantly surprised. The story was wonderful, and actually kept me really interested. The acting was great, and the film itself was amazingly visually stunning. A wonderful fairy tale story.

Romantic Comedy: Bridget Jones's Diary- 2001

Enter the world of Bridget Jones, a thirty-something, single, drinking, smoking, loose-lip'd woman who is looking (and waiting) for love to find her. Unfortunately for her, there are two men in her life, with their own personal history.

Grade: B

This was a funny, and entertaining look into the life of a single woman in her thirties. Renee Zellweger plays the part wonderfully. The acting was great, the story was great. It was a perfect romantic comedy, without fallowing the usual "rules" of the genre. If you're interested in watching a cute romantic comedy, this is the one for you!

Christmas/Dramady: 12 Days of Christmas Eve- 2004

What happens when a successful chain store owner's idea of a perfect Christmas is spending it with a potential client? He gets to do it again! And again, and again and again, until he can figure out that making a deal is not as important as spending the day with the people who matter most, his family.

Grade: C+

This was a movie that fallowed the whole "groundhog day" format, but was still enjoyable, if not original. Personally I like movies that try and see, how would someone react to having to relive the same day over and over? To me, the thought seems not only scary, but might just drive someone insane! The acting was decent, the story was pretty fun. My only negative comment was that the box alone lead me to believe that this was going to be a comedy, and instead gave me very little to laugh about. It was a pretty decent Christmas movie though, and if that is what you are looking for, then give this one a try.

Comedy: Miss Congeniality- 2000

FBI information has determined that the Miss United States pageant may be the next target for a lone terrorist known as "The Citizen", leaving them with one option: Send one of their own agents in as a contestant to get the inside scoop. The problem with their plan? The only person they have to do the job is the most unfeminine, tom-boyish, anti-pageant geek in the bureau.

Grade: B

This is a funny, and cute movie about the total transformation of a woman who is the total opposite of a beauty queen, into a possible winner. Sandra Bullock does a wonderful job, and I'm not just saying that because I LOVE her! This was a very light hearted, fun comedy. My only "negative" opinion is that there wasn't that much to the actual story line, but that was ok, because it fit the feel of the subject.

Romantic (teen) comedy: Nick and Norah's Infinate Playlist-2008

In an attempt to prove that she has a boyfriend, Norah grabs the first guy she sees and kisses him. Little does she know, the guy she kisses is Nick, her "friend's" ex, who still wasn't over her. In this movie, we fallow a group of teens on a night in New York, as they search for their favorite band's secret show.

Grade: C+

This was a cute comedy, and as usual, Michael Cera is funny and cute in his nerdy/shy way. The acting was decent, and the story was as well, it just felt like it was lacking something. If your looking for a cute, teenage love story type of movie, this is worth checking out.

Romantic Comedy: Baby on Board-2008

Angela and Curtis have a seemingly solid marriage, until a series of misunderstandings, and a surprise pregnancy almost ruins the couple completely.

Grade: C-

The movie was pretty cute, and the acting was great, but the story left something to be desired, for me at least. It was actually kind of frustrating, and the entire time I just wanted to yell at the characters to stop pussy-footing around the issues and say what needed to be said! Considering that the entire story is set on misunderstandings, and the fact that NEITHER couple could come out and ask the other what was going on, it kind of made me feel like there was no point to the movie. If you want to watch a fairly cute romantic comedy, and are prepared to be slightly frustrated throughout the entire movie, then this is the one for you!

Romantic Comedy: Gigantic 2008

This is a look into the life of a single mattress salesman who is pursuing his lifelong dream of adopting a Chinese baby. In the process he falls in love with the daughter of one of his customers.

Grade: B

This was an interesting look into a brief period of time in this guys life. The acting was great, and the story was interesting and entertaining. Brian, played by Paul Dano, gives a great performance as a man who seems to be going through life with nothing really outstanding going on. This was one of those stories that didn't necessarily have a point, (not one that I got, at least) but was more about watching this specific time in this person's life. If you're interested in quirky romantic comedies, this is the one for you.
